Transport options on the island
If you are staying in Oban township near halfmoon bay there are plenty of footpaths &
you are likely to be within walking distance of the essentials. It is hilly though so plan accordingly.
If you need a lift to the ceremony please let us know . We can arrange a few carpools as needed.
Some holiday houses include a car with the rental or offer car hire for an additional fee . Other accommodation providers may offer transfers to and from the ferry/plane .
If you are staying for a few days further from town (i.e. Lee bay / horseshoe bay ) you may find it easiest to hire a vehicle or use the local taxi company.
There is only one taxi company on the island . Call Aurora cab co. : 0277 227 935
Pete Ross automotive has vehicles for hire. Call : 03 219 1266
You can also hire scooters and cars from the red shed near the main wharf.
If you enjoy cycling see Pete down at the electric bike depot on main road .
You can hire bikes for multiple days or just a few hours. Kids seats and trailers for luggage are available.
Activity ideas for your trip...
Hang out on the beach , look for interesting seashells and wildlife.
Have a go at kiwi spotting. Traill park is worth trying when it is dark. Make sure you use a red light -red cellophane and an elastic band will do the trick.
Enjoy the clear night sky and do some star gazing.
Look for little blue penguins coming in for the night, around sunset is best for penguin spotting. Try looking at the rocks under the diesel tank at the wharf or walk out to evening cove beach.
Check out the island’s history at the museum.
Hire an electric bike or book a bus tour and do a tiki tour.
Play a round of golf . Hire gear from the flights building/post office.
Head to Rakiura charters on main road and book a trip to Ulva island to go bird spotting.
If you are staying till Sunday night check out the pub quiz at the south sea hotel.
Do a kayak tour with Bill 027 495 9288
Try snorkelling with Olli at Dive Rakiura (don’t worry they provide good warm wetsuits).
Go on a fishing trip with Leask bay charters
Call Fluff on +64 27 303 0436
or….in-case Fluff is out fishing right now….
Bonnie on +64 27 332 9960
if Fluff is booked out tequila charters are great too.
...Or just relax. It is a great place to enjoy doing nothing much
Some nature walk suggestions :
Times given starting from and returning to the four square supermarket.
For longer walks check out the department of conservation website.
